My approach to the analysis
Some agencies have hidden their hourly rates in their terms and conditions and other subpages.
Nevertheless, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how much a website costs.
It can be compared to the question, “How much does a house cost?”
The price of a house also varies depending on its location, size, and amenities.
For a website, the factors are similar to:
- Anzahl der Seiten (Onepager, 10 Seiten oder 100 Seiten?)
- Funktionen (Buchungstools, Kalenderintegration, Newsletter)
- Schnittstellen (CRM, ERP, etc.)
- Inhalte (selbst schreiben oder erstellen lassen)
- Fotos und Videos (Stockfotos, professionelles Fotoshooting, Anzahl der Fotos)
- Design (Motion Design, 3D Design, Grafikdesign)
- CMS-Systeme (WordPress, Webflow, Framer, TYPO3, etc.)
All of these factors directly affect the price of a website.
However, the latest technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), have made website development more efficient and cost-effective than ever before.

In order to understand why there is such a price range for individual web offers, one must first understand the cost factors of websites.
Key cost factors include the current state of the website, the desired marketing goals, the requirements for functionality and interfaces, as well as the scope of the website and the timeline for completing the project.
In the following, I will take a closer look at the cost influences of these factors.
But first, we need to outline the two basic service models used by web agencies.
Service models of web agencies
Web agencies are similar to SEO agencies.
Generally speaking, the services can be divided into two categories.
Specifically, standardized and customized website services.
What is the difference?
Standardisierte Dienstleistungen
Standardisierte Dienstleistungen sind oft die kostengünstigere Option.
These are standardized website templates that meet basic needs.
Standardisierte Web-Angebote enthalten einen definierten Leistungsumfang:
Here are some examples:
- One-pager templates
- Simple website templates
In general, almost any website can be created using a template.
This is why there is such a wide price range—from CHF 900 to CHF 6,400—for a basic company website.
For less than CHF 5,000, you will most likely get a template that is customized to your corporate design.
BUT… standardized websites aren't suitable for every business.
Why?
The short answer: because standard packages aren't tailored to the target audience and specific needs of each company.
Here are some examples from my previous web projects, which services individual web projects can contain:
- ClinicX: A modern corporate website was developed for a leading Swiss clinic specializing in integrative medicine and longevity, which digitally reinforces the brand’s vision and contributes to its stronger positioning in the healthcare market.
- Perspectives Switzerland: Development of a WordPress-based media platform with an integrated CMS, user-friendly navigation, and SEO-first architecture to efficiently publish content and increase online visibility.
- Exeon: Development of a sophisticated web design based on a complete rebranding, as well as the implementation of advanced features, multilingual content, and HubSpot integration. This project highlights how corporate web design can be combined with technical requirements.

Your starting position and goals for a website
Before we can start with a web project, the following points must be clarified:
-
Current status of your website: What does your website look like right now? What interfaces and features does it have? Has the domain been reindexed, or has it been active for several years? Are there any technical errors in the code, or is the website technically sound?
-
-
Features and Requirements: What features are you looking for? Do you need an online booking feature? Should the website be available in multiple languages? What are your requirements for the content management system? How many pages are needed? Will new images be required, and should they be taken during a professional photo shoot?
-
Timeframe: By when should the project be completed?
-
Check internal resources: What internal resources are available for implementing the web project? Will you be writing the content yourself, or is there someone in your company who can do it? Communication is also important: Is there someone who can serve as the point of contact for the web project?
All these factors influence not only the costs, but also the way in which a website is created.
A more in-depth web audit allows us to provide an initial budget estimate and determine the most suitable solution (one-pager, simple website, or complex website).
The general cost factors of a website
The costs of a website are generally incurred in three main areas.
These include:
-
What are the infrastructure costs of a website?
Server hosting costs
Hosting is essentially like rent (think of a house)—it’s the fee you pay to secure space on a computer (server) so you can run your website.
With website builders like Jimdo, Wix, or Squarespace, the cost of server hosting is already included.
While this costs more, it also has its advantages, as the server can be scaled up as your company grows.
You can also take advantage of the flexibility that comes with having your own hosting.
This allows your web agency to make specific changes to the server so that your website runs faster.
Web hosting prices for a business website (with 1 to 20 pages, without database integration or e-commerce functionality) range from 150 to 200 CHF per year.
Depending on the scope and requirements of the website, server costs can account for a significant portion of the operating expenses.
The cost of running an online store (with over 1,000 products) ranges from CHF 1,000 to tens of thousands of CHF per year.
Domain costs
A domain name is the address used to find a website on the Internet.
www.beyondweb.ch is the name of our domain.
It can be purchased from a domain registrar, such as Infomaniak.
The exact cost depends on the specific domain extension, such as “.ch” or “.com.” For example, a “.ch” domain costs between 10 and 15 CHF on average, while a “.com” domain costs between 10 and 20 CHF.
In addition, you can purchase special domain extensions such as ".restaurant," ".app," or ".gmbh." These are usually more expensive than standard extensions and cost between 30 and 100 CHF; some domains can even cost over 1,000 CHF.
Contracts with registrars are typically signed for one year.
Some providers also offer a discount if the domain name is purchased for multiple years.
Software costs
Nowadays, most websites are no longer programmed from scratch, but are set up using software known as a content management system (CMS)
There are various CMS systems; the best known is WordPress.
In 2024, more than 42.7% of all websites worldwide were powered by WordPress.
WordPress owes its popularity to its open-source strategy.
Open source means that the program is available to everyone free of charge and that the operator is free to further develop the website for their own purposes.
As a result, millions of plugins and other software extensions have been developed based on WordPress, and they are constantly being improved.
Thanks to this large and active community, WordPress is never in danger of becoming obsolete.
In addition, WordPress can be used to create any kind of website.
We can create everything from simple blogs to large, comprehensive e-commerce websites.
Some of the best-known companies that use WordPress include Walt Disney, The New York Times, Mercedes-Benz, and the TV channel SKY.
There are no limits to what your website can do!
How much do the design and features of a WordPress website cost?
Once the domain is available, the server hosting is set up and the content management system (CMS) is installed, you can start designing your website.
design
There are several design approaches for a new website, and therefore different prices.
If you want a WordPress website, the cost will vary depending on whether you use a pre-made website template, a customized template, or a website built from scratch.
Each option has its pros and cons and differs in terms of both cost and value for money.
If you're setting up a website on your own, you can buy a design template starting at CHF 60.
However, you'll also need to customize the template to match your company's corporate design and often add new elements as well.
On top of that, there's the entire technical implementation and installation of plugins.
Templates can also be designed and customized to meet your specific needs.
If you like a particular template, a web designer or web agency can customize the code for you.
Given an average hourly rate of 166 CHF in the Swiss web industry, you should expect to pay between 1,000 CHF and 6,000 CHF for such changes.
However, the absolute best are the fully customized websites.
Developing such complex, elaborate websites requires several hundred hours of work, depending on the design and functionality.
For this reason, you should expect costs starting at 7,500 CHF
In addition, a WordPress page builder plugin like Elementor can help you further enhance your design through visual drag-and-drop editing.
With Elementor, you can easily and quickly make changes to your website design, even without any technical expertise.
Elementor is available both as a free version and as a premium version from CHF 50 per year.
However, Elementor is not compatible with all templates.
You'll also need a professional web designer, since complex design changes can only be implemented with programming skills.
Functionality
Functionality is probably the most difficult aspect to evaluate in terms of cost.
This is because the costs depend heavily on your company and its specific needs.
There are various types of websites that serve different purposes.
Often, multiple features are combined on a single website.
How about you?
Do you need an interactive contact form?
An online booking tool?
A blog?
Ultra-fast charging times?
A multilingual website?
An online store using WooCommerce, for example?
Or maybe all of the above?
No problem! All of these features can be implemented in WordPress relatively inexpensively using plugins.
This is one of WordPress’s strengths, because thanks to its open-source nature, over 58,000 plugins have been developed and are now available!
Many of these plugins are free, but some premium plugins are also required.
It is therefore difficult to estimate the costs, which can range from CHF 50 to several hundred CHF per year.
What does it cost to market a professional website?
Once your website has been created and launched, there’s just one final step left: marketing.
To get the most out of a new website, your business needs to be easily found on Google.
Otherwise, your website is only tapping into a fraction of its online marketing potential.
To make your website easier to find, it needs to be optimized for search engines.
However, search engine optimization (SEO) can be costly if done correctly.
SEO is suitable for companies with a long-term plan and strategy.
SEO requires regular attention, i.e., on a daily or weekly basis.
For example, many SEO agencies offer services with a minimum contract term of 6 months.
Since Google’s algorithm is very slow to classify new websites as “important,” it can take several months for SEO results to become visible.
Especially when it comes to SEO, it’s important not to fall for empty promises from agencies.
No reputable SEO agency can catapult your website to the top of Google search results in just a few weeks.
According to our latest statistics on SEO costs, a comprehensive SEO service costs approximately 1,000 CHF per month.
Local SEO starts at CHF 470 per month, SEO audits at CHF 790, and SEO workshops at CHF 750.
For SEO to work, you need to regularly create high-quality content and optimize it for SEO.
According to a study, it takes about 55 to 70 articles before the effects of increased traffic become noticeable.
The prices for SEO services may seem high, but it’s still worth optimizing your website for Google.
About 28% of all clicks on Google go to the top result in the Google rankings, 16% to the second result, and 11% to the third result.
Another commonly used marketing method for websites is called pay-per-click (PPC). Just like with search engine optimization, this strategy increases a website’s visibility on Google.
However, not in organic search, but by placing ads that you can design yourself.
Summary
As it turns out, the cost of having a website can vary greatly from one company to another.
A company’s size, scope, requirements for functionality and design, complexity, and individual needs and goals are ultimately the key factors determining the total cost.
A high-quality website requires time and expertise in various areas (IT, design and marketing).
The prices can also vary depending on the web agency and the effort required to implement the website.
